Statement Regarding Media Commentary on VFL Player Eligibility

The Gippsland League would like to provide clarity regarding an AFL Victoria VFL player eligibility rule and recent media commentary.

AFL Victoria distributed correspondence last week, which was subsequently shared with Club Football Operations Managers, confirming that all clubs are required to adhere to the player eligibility rules outlined in Rule 12 of the AFL Victoria Country Rules for the upcoming finals series.

In a recent media article, the League issued a comment outlining the following:

  • The Gippsland League has made no changes to its By-Laws regarding finals eligibility.
  • AFL Victoria has advised that its rules supersede any local regulations concerning VFL player finals eligibility.

The Gippsland League has written to AFL Victoria and is working collaboratively with its member clubs to explore potential solutions for the 2025 season and into season 2026.
