THE SEASON OF THE DRAW

As the siren sounded to end Round 15, another tight contest in the Senior Football saw Wonthaggi Power finish with their second drawn match of the 2022 season. The Power ended their match against Traralgon tied at 62 points apiece.  League historian Paul Carter looked into the history books and found it is the first time that a Senior Football team in this competition has had a season where they’ve drawn 2 matches since Leongatha in 1978.

Drawn matches are quite rare and throughout the League's entire history. Including Round 15 2022, the League, since 1954, has played 6037 matches of which 56 have been drawn, meaning approximately 1 game in every 108 results in a draw.

The record number of drawn matches in a season in this league stands at 3 : Yallourn (1959), Warragul (1965) and Trafalgar (1965).

In that 1965 season Warragul and Trafalgar drew both games that they played against each other (Rounds 1 and 10), the only instance of teams drawing both their meetings in the one year.

In a historic day for the competition the Wonthaggi Power and Traralgon A Grade match finished as a draw also. This was the first time in Gippsland League history that both a Senior Football and A Grade netball side have drawn matches on the same day.

Wonthaggi Power and Traralgon played out a draw in the A Grade netball in Round 15

Since 2007 there have been only 6 draws in the Senior Football grade. While the nature of netball scoring produces more opportunity for drawn matches there have only been 18 draws (2012 and 2014 data not included) averaged out at just over 1 draw per season. Morwell has been the club most involved in drawn matches since 2007 with the club being involved in 10 drawn matches between their Senior Football and A Grade, with the netball team being involved in 8 draws in that time.
